The 2022 Heafner/Williams Vocal Competition

Heafner/Williams Vocal Competition seeks to identify and offer assistance to highly talented vocalists and to encourage the theatrical vocal arts.

The competition is open to singers from ages 18 – 35 who are residents of or enrolled in school in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must present selections from at least three of the following five repertoire categories:

• Musical Theater
• Opera
• Operetta
• Oratorio
• Classical Song

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

*If you are not able to complete this online application online for any reason, you may download a PDF copy of the form here, then mail it (with the included requirements) to the address below.

• An audio cassette tape, CD, or digital file. No videos please.
• The completed application form filled out in its entirety. Incomplete application forms will not be processed. Repertoire for all rounds must be determined at the time of application.
• A 150-word (maximum) biographical sketch suitable for the program. Include musical background and experience.
• An 8″ x 10″ photo. Label with your name.
• A non-refundable entrance fee of $50.00.

If you use our staff accompanist, you will pay an extra $60.00 fee directly to your accompanist.

PRELIMINARY TAPE ROUND

• Submit an audio cassette tape, CD, or digital file of 3 selections chosen from the 5 repertoire categories. No videos, please. Label your audio carefully with your name and selections.
• From the audios submitted, the judges will select those singers who will be invited to participate live in the competition at the Lincoln Cultural Center. You will be notified as soon as possible.
• DEADLINE FOR ENTRY IS FEBRUARY 14, 2022

SEMI-FINAL AND FINAL ROUNDS

• Prepare 2 selections for the semi-final round, and 3 selections for the final round. You will have 5 different selections. No medleys.
• These 5 selections must be chosen from at least 3 of the 5 categories in each round. You only need to meet the requirement over all 5 songs. For example, you may choose 3 required selections and the rest are your choice from any category. You may choose more than 3 categories. No one category is more important than another.
• You must represent more than one category in each round.
• Of the 5 selections, at least one choice must be in English.
• If you choose Opera and perform more than one aria within a round, each must be in a different language and have a different composer.
• You may repeat a selection from the Preliminary Round if you wish, but you may not repeat from the Semi-Final to the Final Round.
• The judges will hear all of your selections in each round. At the time of the competition, you may change your order of songs within the rounds. You may NOT exchange songs between the Semi-Final and Final Rounds.
• You will be allotted 12 minutes for each round.

You may bring your own accompanist or use our staff accompanist for an additional $60.00 fee, to be paid at the time of your rehearsal. Copies of your music are due by February 22, 2022 and are to be sent directly to your assigned accompanist.

Dressing rooms and warm-up space provided. Full rehearsals are possible near the theater.

We will provide housing if you are too far way to drive for both rounds.

PRIZES

FIRST PRIZE: $2,500
SECOND PRIZE: $1,500
THIRD PRIZE: $750
EACH ADDITIONAL FINALIST: $250

• Enclose your fee
• Repertoire must be determined at the time of application
• Memorize your music
• Each round will be 12 minutes
• Applications must be received by: February 14, 2022
• Repertoire changes and housing forms are due by: February 22, 2022
• Staff accompanist music is due by: February 22, 2022
